The Red Wings used a strong outing by starting pitcher Jack Collins (College of Charleston) as well as clutch hitting from their bench to win a 14-inning Friday night classic here at McDonough Park. Jack Collins struck out eight batters and catcher Zac Miller (University of Delaware) hit an RBI single in the bottom of the 14th to secure the victory for the Red Wings (9-13). Watertown (14-7) used a late homerun to tie the game in the eighth but was unable to find anymore run support from that point on.
The Red Wings would open up the scoring in the first inning when Left Fielder Jared Gillis (Delaware St.) hit a single to score Designated Hitter Brian Knapp (Pomona College). The Wings would extend their lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the second when Knapp hit into a fielder’s choice, scoring Catcher Lane Powell (Alabama Southern) in the process.
Watertown would quickly tie the game up at two in the top of the third inning when Second Baseman Andrew Bacon hit a two-run homerun over the fence in right field.
Geneva would continue to take advantage of Watertown mistakes in the bottom of the third when Gillis drew a walk with the bases loaded, scoring Center Fielder Jack Harris (San Francisco State).
Rapids starting pitcher Tony Rivera would exit in the bottom of the fifth inning having allowed three runs on four hits with three strikeouts, and would be replaced by David Marmann. Geneva would jump on the new pitcher for two more runs in the fifth when Justin Barr (Central Alabama C.C.) hit a triple to score Harris and then score himself on a Trustin Riley (Tampa U) groundout.
Red Wings starting pitcher Jack Collins’ night would end in the eighth inning, being replaced by Joey Haas (U of Delaware). After getting the second out of the inning, Haas would allow the tying runs to score when Catcher Nolan Wilson hit a two-run shot over the left field wall to tie the game at five.
Red Wings closer Brett Super (Pomona Pitzer College) would strikeout the side in the top of the ninth but Geneva was unable to capitalize in the bottom of the inning, sending them to their second extra-innings game at McDonough Park this season.
The Red Wings bullpen led by Mark Bobko (Bloomsburg) would hold the Rapids off the score sheet for the remainder of the game until catcher Zac Miller was able to hit a walk-off RBI single right off the foot of the Watertown pitcher to secure the victory. This is Geneva’s second extra innings walk-off of the season and snaps their three game losing skid coming into the night.
The Red Wings will be back in action on Saturday June 30th when they travel to Elmira to take on the Pioneers. Geneva will return home on Tuesday July 3rd when they take on the Newark Pilots, with first pitch at 7:05.
