The Geneva Red Wings (16-10) dropped a 5-1 contest to the Elmira Pioneers (14-13) at McDonough Park on Monday night.
The first run of the game was scored on a dropped third strike in the top of the second inning. Things stayed put until the top of the seventh, when a Troy Dixon (Samford) RBI groundout scored another run (unearned) for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers added another run in the top of the eighth with a Colton Evans (UC Davis) walked with the bases loaded, scoring Marshall Gilbert (John A Logan).
The Wings finally got on the board in the bottom of the eighth. Mikey Arman (Kenyon) worked a leadoff walk, and William Simoneit (Cornell) eventually grounded out to first to score him from third. That would be the entirety of Geneva’s scoring in the contest.
Elmira added two runs of insurance in the top of the 9th on an Allbry Major (Xavier) two run home run.
Both starting pitchers had excellent outings. Geneva’s Alex Bellardini (Youngstown State) threw seven innings, only giving up one earned run and striking out six. Elmira’s Grant Donahue (Virginia) tossed five scoreless innings, striking out seven. The Pioneers’ bullpen combined for four innings of one run ball to close out the game and secure the victory.
Geneva relievers Domenic Nardone (Siena) and Brent Holcombe (Bossier Parish CC) made appearances in the eighth and ninth innings respectively.
The Red Wings return to action on Tuesday night at Colburn Park to take on the Pilots (7-21) for their annual Fourth of July game.
