On Wednesday night, the Geneva Red Wings pulled out all the stops to defeat the Elmira Pioneers in extra innings. Methods included utilizing a stray house cat roaming the streets of Elmira. However, on Saturday night, they would jump ahead early and never look back in order to take a 2-0 season series lead against the Elmira ball club. This night belonged exclusively to the Wings, and more specifically, it was dominated by Geneva starter Brian Reed (1-0, RIT).
Joseph Tassin (Bossier Paris CC) started things off early for the Wings offense. A bases loaded, 2 out single through the 6 hole put the Wings up 2-0 in the top of the 1st inning.
Two more runs would come across in the top of the 3rd for the Wings, courtesy of 5 walks in the frame. Through the first 9 outs, the Wings received 7 free passes. They cashed in these opportunities to lead 4-0 through the first three innings.
A TJ Byrd (Rend Lake) double would start things off in the fourth for the Geneva lineup. A bases loaded walk and another Tassin 2 RBI single would extend the lead to 7-0. Tassin would finish 2-3 with 4 RBI on the evening.
That support proved to be more than enough for Red Wings’ starter Brian Reed. The righty from RIT retired the first 12 Pioneers batters he saw, and struck out 12 in seven scoreless innings. The only trouble he faced was a bases loaded, one out situation in the bottom of the sixth. Reed responded by accumulating his 11th and 12th strikeouts of the night against the next two batters.
The Red Wings (5-2) carry a two game win streak to Syracuse today, where they’ll take on the Flames (3-4) to end their weekend set. Slater O’Brien (St. Joseph’s) will be the starter in that matchup.

OTHER NOTES FROM THE GAME:
When Yohei Ishiyama (Nihon University, Japan) crossed the plate in the top of the 1st on the Joseph Tassin single, it marked his first American run scored.
In the span of 12 batters he sat down in a row to start the game, Brian Reed struck out 6 straight. This came in the form of striking out the side two innings in a row.
TJ Byrd had two doubles in consecutive at bats on the day.
Wings starters have now thrown 15 consecutive scoreless innings in the past two games, and the ball club has outscored opponents 12-0 in that span. Their run differential is +11 over the past two games.
