Wings Magical 2018 Season Ends in Semi-Final Playoff Game 3

By MATTHEW MECKLEY

The Geneva Red Wings magical season ended in a tragic way on Saturday night as they dropped a decisive game three to Jamestown 11-5. Tragedy struck in the bottom of the eighth inning as outfielder Langston Livingston collapsed out in left field with a neck injury. He was transported off the field by medical personnel.

“He (Livingston) had thrown a ball over the fence; and he kind of twisted his neck,” Geneva coach David Shwam said. “He could hear a little pop; and when it popped it made him lightheaded. He started back peddling to get back to his position, and then he fell down. He’s in stable condition.”

Early on the Red Wings were playing inspirational baseball. In the top of the first Jesse Hall stole home plate as team mate Justin Barr was stealing second. Geneva would tack on two more runs in the top of the second; as Trustin Riley hit an RBI single allowing Livingston to score, followed by a Jared Gillis RBI that scored Zac Miller.

Jamestown rallied in the bottom of the second as they added three runs themselves to tie the game. The Jammers extended their lead in the bottom of the third as Jeff Timko hit a 2 RBI double. He later scored off a sac-fly to make the score 6-3.

Geneva inched their way back in the game in the top of the fifth as Hall scored on a Nick LaBrasca RBI grounder.

After the injury to Livingston occurred; Jamestown capitalized on the delay and really put the game on ice by adding five more runs.

“Things just fell apart because of that big delay; I think our minds were still focused on Langston,” Shwam added.

Barr added an RBI single in the top of the ninth to give the Red Wings hope at a comeback. Unfortunately for Geneva they ran out of outs.

Shwam took away some positive notes to recap the season which was up and down all summer.

“It was a ride for our kids. But it’s was how we ended the season; coming here to Newark and winning that big double header. We didn’t have a day off after that rain out we had. We took our only day off we had to play. We had to play 10 days in a row, and we actually played well.

“The way we ended was real positive. We know we got beat tonight. We could’ve cashed in a week and a half ago and not even have been here. We just battled all the way through.”
